HIV/AIDS in South Africa
HOPE worldwide
The non-governmental organization HOPE Village, South African division of HOPE worldwide is composed of Afrikaners (White south Africans) and Black South Africans, one of the rare cases of mixed organizations in the country. It works mainly in the fight against the AIDS epidemic, by a door-to-door prevention campaign in the poor areas and by the support of the terminal patients, frequently visiting them. South Africa is currently experiencing one of the most severe HIV epidemics in the world. By the end of 2005, there were five and a half million people living with HIV in South Africa, and almost 1,000 AIDS deaths occurring every day, according to UN AIDS estimates.
